This song was written as a sequel of sorts for a song recorded by Charlie Poole, also called San Antonio. Poole's tale depicts a cowboy distraught over a love who had seemingly disappeared, but had been seen in San Antonio with a man named Tony. This song imagines that the cowboy travels to San Antonio in an attempt to win her back, but fails.

Rattlesnake Jim Binkley was a mythical figure. Some say he was the son of early middle TN settlers descendent from a long line of Swiss watchmakers, and others that he was a fugitive of the law, desperately running from a string of successful bank robberies connected with the James Gang. It is possible that he could have been both. At any rate, he was my great, great grandfather. Two songs were penned in the year of his death titled "Rattlesnake JIm." Both detail circumstances leading to a bloody gun fight. This song stems from an idea that perhaps all of those stories contained an element of truth, so I wanted to combine them, if for no other reason than to make some small addition to the mythology surrounding his life.
